Horsford Meets With Rural Dems
Posting Date: 10/16/2012
Press Release
State Senator Steven Horsford held at Meet & Greet in Mesquite on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the home of Bill and Elaine Hurd. Horsford is the Democratic congressional candidate for District 4.
He told the gathering that he stands with policies that protect the middle class and he knows how to get legislation passed, as he has proven as a legislator for the state of Nevada. Horsford also emphasized the need for jobs, that he will be a tireless advocate for policies that bring jobs to Nevada, particularly clean energy jobs. In a give-and-take exchange with voters, Horford talked about health care, the economy, the environment, housing and the Overton Power District.
Everyone appreciated the opportunity to talk individually with Senator Horsford and get their questions answered.
Commentary
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 I am deeply, deeply disappointed in this paper. What began as a fair reporting of events has descended into nothing more than just another Republican talk sheet. I am referring to the two upbeat articles, complete with pictures and video of the Hatch, Heller, Hardy visit compared with the one paragraph, no pictures and no story on Horsfords visit. In the last months, this paper has become more and more right leaning and this blatant example shows the MCJ bias. While the MCJ can admit it is a Republican rag at least make the appearance of equal treatment as a journalist. The Horsford insult was just a slap in the face to those who don't see things your way. Your kid gloves treatment of our local assemblyman, Mr Hardy is completely transparent of your failure to report his misdeeds. I am done with the MCJ, it has proven itself to not fully report the news. Just the news that benefits those on the right. By: Dave
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 To Dave:
The article you see here was submitted to the MCJ by Elaine Hurd who was host to Horsford on Sunday evening in her home. I personally did not attend the event because I was taking the evening off and spending time with my husband and friends.
In fact, there have been many Meet and Greet gatherings by all the candidates, Democrat and Republican that we did not run an article about simply because the people attending did not submit them to us. Ms. Hurd happened to send me the article and picture and I published it.
I did an extensive interview with Steven Horsford last month but only ran an article and video of his opponent Danny Tarkanian when he addressed a local Tea Party meeting in early September. So if I favored anyone in the 4CD race it can be said, and has been, that I favored the Democrat Horsford.
The MCJ Staff has covered as many political events on both sides of the aisle as we possibly can. We will have a reporter at Shelly Berkley's Meet & Greet on Wednesday evening to ensure we give her the same amount of coverage as we did her opponent Dean Heller.
As far as treating Hardy with kid gloves, I asked exactly the same basic questions of both Hardy and his opponent Felipe Rodriguez. In my opinion I was much harder on Hardy because he has a track record on which to analyze his performance. Go back and watch Hardy's videos again and you'll see me asking him questions about his actions that have been most criticized.
We are also running a special series in the Mike v Mike column analyzing both candidates in various races meaningful to Mesquite.
I appreciate your feedback and criticism.

Posted Date: 10/16/2012 Unfortunately the MCJ’s only two official positions in this election season are to 1) slam Democrat Collins and 2) endorse TP Republican Toone. Intended or not, this begins to appear like a publication that leans hard right. In addition, the two excessive back-to-back stories about the Romney Bus, Hatch, Heller event last week were pretty blatantly one-sided. Two long stories about the same basic event with many pictures in each? When has the MCJ ever done that before? If the MCJ wants to try to look non-partisan, you may be better off following the lead of the Mayor by simply not endorsing any candidate. Many newspapers take political stands and thus rightly get labeled as such. It is my hope that the MCJ will try to be neutral, but that is starting to look doubtful. By: nonpartisan?
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 Barbara Ellested has printed everything we have asked her to print for Democratic candidates and events in Mesquite because she has made it clear to us and others that she wants MCJ to be politically fair. Thank you, Barbara, for your efforts.
Elaine Hurd By: Elaine Hurd
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 Thats a pretty weak argument about Cresent, Ms Editor. He siad once he's elected, he represents the state and a blind man can see that means he follows the party line. He has done nothing for Mesquite and you let him off the hook. It is perfectly clear he is not the kind of elected offical we need FOR Mesquite but you let it go. I think I must agree, your colors are showing. By: Brent
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 Cresent Hardy supports coal and the MCJ didn't even blink. The whole world is going to new energy and the MCJ gave him a pass because he is one of the good old boys. Coal -really? Solar and gas would provide immediate 100's of jobs in Mesquite not to mention training and college. Non partisan above is right, the MCJ did everything but kiss Hatch on the lips and made it clear ignorant statements like -coal will provide lots of jobs (for Mesquite?), wait I forgot, he doesn't represent Mesquite- is OK for the MCJ idea of fair reporting. Mike and Mike will be another -let's all ignore these ignorant statements and just criticize the other guy but not our guy. The MCJ could have done better, hate to see what you will do to Berkley. Posted Date: 10/16/2012 The kind of bills Hardy thinks are critical and introduced were 1) to end early voting (keeps Dems from voting) and 2) allow farm food to not be inspected (helps his good old boy buddies in Overton). Man, he has really been working tirelessly for us in Mesquite. By: Kathy
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 Hardys record shows he is not honest with the voters in Mesquite. He says he represents the state but when his pals ask for a bill so they can have a farm cookout, he immediately does it. When Mesquite needs help, he's nowhere to be seen. Supporting coal shows he isn't the most brilliant guy in politics and if it were up to him, we would all still be riding horses in Mesquite. By: Zack
Posted Date: 10/16/2012 The people of Mesq would be better served if guys like Hardy stayed out of politics. He has no vision, no courage, has gone bankrupt, sides with special interests and ignores our interests. The worst kind of politician. By: Paul
Posted Date: 10/21/2012 For all the above crying, I must ask: Why don't more of YOU run for office? Complain all you want, but it doesn't accomplish anything! For Pete's sake, if you can do better, why don't you? By: Big Mon
