TUESDAY: THOMASINO’S BIRDIE BEATS PETRICK – LIRA DROPS TO 2ND
“Bubba” Petrick’s birdie on the first hole was a prelude to a great round of golf but he was aced out of medalist
honors when his playing partner Frank Thomasino birdied the number one handicap hole the par four 13th. Petrick would also birdie number five on his way to a superb one under par 34 on the front. Thomasino stayed close with his nice one over par 36.
Petrick's triple bogey starting out the back side would eventually be his down fall as he would shoot 41 on the back while Thomasino birdied #11 and the number one handicap hole 13.
Little did he know that that birdie would become the tie breaker at the end of the day. Both players turned in nice rounds of 75 but the birdie on 13 awarded Thomasino first place.
“As I stated last week I had to change the way I played #13 and the last two times I used rescue club off the deck and a short iron into the green and both times I have come away with birdie”. I would say you found the correct procedure. Though Manny Lira shot a pretty good round 95 his net 66 was third place behind John Meyer’s 80 and net 65 and Courtney Larsen’s 93 and net 64.
Meyer’s second place landed him in first place in the June Beat the Heat tournament and dropped Lira into second place.
THURSDAY:
LIRA HANGS ON TO WIN JUNE BTH TOURNAMENT
Manny Lira (93) netted himself a 68 which was five strokes back of Courtney Larsen’s (87) and net 65. Even though Lira was knocked out of first place on Tuesday of this week he knew that he had won first place on Thursday before teeing off because
his challenger was not playing on Thursday.
But despite that fact Lira played strong golf for the last six rounds, not finishing any lower than third place low net, which will in all likely hood, will put you on top at the end of the month. Congratulations Manny!
Here are the rest of the top ten finishers. Second place was John Meyer. Tom Greer also finished strong moving up to the third spot. Joel Reilly who also did not play on the last day dropped from third to the 4th spot.
“Bubba” Petrick and Tom Durenberger battled back and forth the last week for 5th place but it went to Durenberger on the last day just four points ahead of Petrick. Larsen, with back to back first place net finishes ended up in the 7th spot. Just 36 points back of Larsen was Terry Gardner. Frank Thomasino grabbed ninth place. Ben Bishop edged out Pat “Smitty” Huetter by 14 points for the last pay off position.
APERCU’S: Huetter and Petrick shared holes of the day. Huetter, on the par four 4th hole on the Palmer, hit his second shot off the hardpan next to the wall over the green. His 65 foot chip back to the pin stopped six feet short but he sunk the putt for nice par. Petrick hit his second shot in the water on hole #8. But knocked his 4th shot to within 42 inches and made the putt for another “sweet” par five.
NOTE: Next weeks play is on Tuesday July 3rd at 7:00 at Falcon Ridge, and Thursday July 5th at WOLF CREEK at 7:00. Always check your sign - up sheets, and or our website, for any changes. Anyone interested in the MMGA may call 346-6363 or visit our website at mesquitemensgolf.com.
