CONSUMER ALERT - Unlicensed Contractors Victimizing Homeowners
Posting Date: 05/17/2012

The Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB) has received images of two men presumed to be representatives of CRV Construction, an unlicensed contractor out of Arizona performing a roofing scam in the Clark County region, and requests the assistance of homeowners who were victimized or came into contact with this company to contact NSCB.

Homeowners with any information on the alleged suspects of CRV Construction, including signed contracts/documentation, descriptions of any vehicles or license plates operated by CRV Construction representatives, or any descriptions of the alleged suspects are urged to contact the Board immediately to help verify and provide supporting evidence to NSCB investigators. Contact NSCB’s Unlicensed Contractor

Hotline: (702) 486-1160 or the Main Office: (702) 486-1100.

NSCB issued a consumer alert May 3 advising homeowners that an unlicensed company, CRV Construction, was performing door-to-door solicitations claiming Clark County has been designated a disaster area due to high winds and soliciting roof repairs, which could be covered through homeowner’s insurance.

They used high pressure sales tactics to get homeowners to sign a contract for roofing

repairs. Homeowners were informed their insurance should cover the cost, but in the event it didn’t, the contract states the homeowner is obligated to pay the total amount or else a lien will be placed on their home. NSCB confirmed with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors that CRV Construction is not a licensed entity of Arizona, nor are they a licensed contractor in the State of Nevada.

NSCB encourages consumers looking for contractors to perform work to follow these ten tips:

1. Only hire licensed contractors.

2. Check the contractor’s license number by utilizing our Online Contractor Search at www.nscb.nv.gov

3. Get three references and review past work.

4. Get at least three bids.

5. Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms.

6. For pool contracts, pay 10% down or $1,000 - whichever is less, if a deposit is required.

7. Don’t let payments get ahead of the work. Keep a record of all payments.

8. Don’t make a final payment until you are satisfied with the job.

9. Don’t pay cash.

10. Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.

Additional information for consumers is available on NSCB’s website at www.nscb.nv.gov
